Certified Nursing Assistants play a vital role in providing hands-on care, comfort, and support to our residents. Our seven-week program offers a supported pathway into the healthcare industry with paid training, professional education, and employment opportunities at MCH. Prior experience is not required.

Program Snapshot

  • Recruitment & Screening: Candidates are recruited and screened by MCH and then referred to Monroe Community College and RochesterWorks.

  • Training: Trainees will meet at MCC for 32 hours per week, Tuesdays through Fridays, for classroom instruction, labs and clinicals at Rochester Regional Health. Each class holds 16 students and begins every seven to eight weeks.

  • Employment at MCH: Participants will work for eight hours a week at MCH as a paid CNA trainee.

  • Expectations: Attendance is required. Missed classes are work absences. Continued employment is dependent on meeting program requirements. A positive professional attitude and a strong desire to succeed are essential.

Curriculum

This program consists of classroom instruction, hands-on lab learning, group activities, and patient care on units to introduce participants to working in a healthcare setting. After successfully completing the course, candidates must pass the New York State Prometric Written and Clinical Skills Exams to become a CNA.

Topics covered include 

  • Personal patient care like bathing and grooming
  • Dietary care and eating assistance
  • Skin care and wound care
  • Safe patient handling
  • Care for cognitively impaired patients
  • Dementia education
  • Mental health and social services
  • Restorative services and rehab

New! Trainees will be able to participate in enrichment sessions on topics like professionalism, mindset, financial literacy, career development, and self-care, including a life skills development workshop prior to the course.

Pay and benefits

Trainees will be paid an hourly wage for:

  • Time trainees spend learning to become a CNA
  • Time trainees spend working as a Nurse Assistant during the program.
  • Time trainees spend taking the New York State exams to become a CNA
